Calling us

Who should I call first in a real emergency at my car or my home?

If a child, a pet or anyone else is locked inside your car or your home, call 911 first. Emergency responders are the right call in that situation, especially in hot or cold weather. Once that call is made, you can call us at (484) 488-7719, but never wait on a locksmith before calling 911.

What should I have ready when I call Sam's Local Locksmith about a lock or key problem?

Have the address or location ready, plus a short description of the problem: what is locked, lost, broken or sticking. For a car, add the year, make and model and whether it has a push-button start. For a door, tell us what kind of lock is on it. Those answers help us bring the right parts and tell you honestly when we can come.

Can you tell me on the phone when you will be able to get to me?

We tell you on the phone when we can honestly be there, based on where you are and what we are already working on. If that does not work for you, we say so plainly, so you can decide whether to wait for us or make other plans. We would rather give you a real answer than a hopeful one.

Can I schedule a lock change or a rekey for a day that suits me, instead of an emergency visit?

Call us and we set a day and time that fits within our hours. Rekeying, lock replacement, deadbolts, smart locks and commercial work are often easier to plan ahead, and planning lets us bring exactly the hardware your doors need. Tell us how many doors are involved and what you would like done to each one.

Is it okay to call before I know exactly what is wrong with my lock or my key?

Call anyway and describe what you see and hear: a key that will not turn, a fob that does nothing, a door that will not latch. We ask questions to narrow it down, and sometimes the answer is something you can fix yourself, like a weak battery. If it needs a visit, we tell you what to expect before we come.

When we arrive

What happens when you arrive at my car, my home or my business?

We look at the lock or the car before we touch anything, then tell you what we plan to do and why. Once you are comfortable, we do the work where the lock is and test it with you: the key turns, the bolt slides, the fob responds or the door latches. When we pack up, everything is ready for you to lock up.

Will you explain the work and my options before you start on my lock?

We explain the work before we start. If there is more than one way to solve the problem, such as rekeying versus replacing a lock, we describe each option and what it means for your door so you can choose. Nothing starts until you know what we plan to do and you are comfortable with it.

Do I need to come to your office, or do you come to my car, home or business?

We come to you. We are a mobile locksmith, so the work happens where the car, the door or the lock already is. Our office in West Chester is open for visits by appointment only, and most people never need to visit it, because the work itself is done on site.

What should I do first if my door was forced or my home was broken into?

Call the police first and leave the door as it is until they are done. Once they have finished, call us and we look at the lock, tell you whether it can be repaired or should be replaced, and rekey your other locks if any keys may be missing. Our aim is to help you secure the door again.

Cars

My keys are locked inside my car in a parking lot. Do you come to where the car is?

We come to the parked car, whether it is in a lot, on a street or in a driveway, and open it where it is parked. Tell us the town, the lot or street, and the year, make and model. If the engine is running or the key is in the trunk, mention that too, so we come prepared for it.

Can you make a new car key if I have lost every key I had for the car?

We make new car keys at the car when every key is lost, so there is no tow involved. We cut the key to fit your locks and ignition, program the chip or fob so the car accepts it, and test it before we leave. Tell us the year, make and model when you call so we bring the right blank.

My key fob stopped working this morning. Is it the battery or the fob itself?

Change the coin battery first, because a weak battery is the most common reason a fob stops working. If a fresh battery does not help, the fob may need programming or replacing, and we do both at the car. Our guide to a key fob that stopped working walks through the signs before you call.

My car key will not turn in the ignition. Can you fix the ignition, or do you only make keys?

We do both. First, try moving the steering wheel gently while you turn the key, and make sure an automatic car is fully in park. If that does not help, we check the key and the ignition at the car, then repair or replace the cylinder or cut a fresh key, whichever the problem calls for.

Homes

We just bought a house. Is rekeying enough before we move in, or do the old locks need to go?

Rekey if the locks work well and you like them, because rekeying makes every old key useless while keeping your hardware. Replace them if they are worn, loose, damaged or not the style you want. We can do either at the house, and we can set all your exterior doors to one key during the same visit.

Can you install a smart lock or a keypad deadbolt that I already bought?

We install keypad and smart locks you have already bought, as long as they fit your door. Tell us what kind of lock it is when you call, and check whether your deadbolt slides without dragging, because a dragging bolt makes motorized locks struggle. We mount it, align it and test the code and the backup key.

My key snapped off in my front door lock. What can I do until you get here?

Leave the broken piece where it is and keep the half you still have. Do not push another key in or reach for glue, because both make removal harder. Use another door if you can, and call us; we remove the piece, check the lock and cut you a working key from the broken parts.

Can you make all the locks on my house work with just one key?

We can key your exterior locks alike, so one key opens the front door, the back door and the deadbolts, as long as the locks accept the same keyway. If one lock cannot, we tell you before we start and suggest replacing only that lock. Tell us how many locks you want on the key when you call.

Businesses

An employee left and still has a key to our office. How should we handle that?

List every door and code the person could open, then rekey those locks and delete their keypad codes. We rekey commercial locks on site so the old keys stop working while your hardware stays in place. If departures happen often, ask us about a master key system, which keeps each future change smaller.

Do you install panic bars and door closers on commercial doors for small businesses?

We install and adjust both. Before you buy hardware, ask your township code office or the fire marshal what your space requires, because they decide. Then tell us what they asked for, what the door is made of and whether it must lock from outside, and we fit hardware that suits that door.

Can you set up a master key system for our building or our office suite?

We design master key systems around how your doors are actually used. The owner gets a key that opens everything, managers get keys for their areas, and each employee key opens only what that person needs. We give you a written chart of which key opens which lock, so later changes stay simple.

We are locked out of our store before opening time. Can you come and help us get inside?

We handle business lockouts on site during our hours. Call with the address and which door you need opened, and we tell you honestly when we can be there. Once you are inside, we check that the lock works properly and talk about anything else that needs attention, such as a lost key that calls for rekeying.

Hours and area

What are your hours, and when can I reach you on the phone?

Call us Sunday to Thursday, 7 AM to 10 PM; Friday, 7 AM to 4 PM; Saturday closed. Those are the hours we answer the phone and work on site. If you get locked out outside those hours, a roadside plan, your landlord or a relative with a spare key may be the better call.

Are you open on Saturdays if I get locked out over the weekend?

We are closed on Saturdays. If you get locked out that day, check whether your roadside plan, your landlord or a relative with a spare can help. On Sunday we are open again from 7 AM to 10 PM, and we keep those same hours through Thursday.

Which towns and counties does Sam's Local Locksmith cover for car, home and business work?

We cover Chester County, including West Chester, Exton, Malvern, Downingtown, Phoenixville and Kennett Square, plus nearby towns in Delaware County, such as Media, and in Montgomery County. If you are unsure whether your address is inside our area, call and ask, and we will tell you plainly.

Do you also work across the state line in Delaware, around Wilmington?

We work in northern New Castle County, Delaware, including Wilmington. The same services apply there as in Pennsylvania: car keys and lockouts, home locks, business locks and safes. Call with your address, and we will confirm that we cover it and tell you honestly when we can come.

Can I visit your office in West Chester to talk about a job in person?

Call first to set an appointment, because our office in West Chester is open for visits by appointment only. Most of our days are spent at customers' cars, homes and businesses, so a phone call is usually the simplest way to talk through a job. If you still want to meet in person, we set a time together.

Questions about your lock?

Office visits in West Chester are by appointment only; the work happens at your door or your car.
