What lost car key replacement covers
If every key to your car is lost, you need more than a copy of an existing key.
We make replacement car keys at the vehicle, with options for cars that use a metal key, a remote or an electronic fob. The replacement must match your car, not just look like the key you lost. Some vehicles use a physical key to unlock and start them, while others rely on an electronic signal. We work with a range of vehicles to provide a key you can use with your car.
A replacement may need a metal blade cut, electronic programming, or both. Some fobs have no blade at all, so cutting is not part of every job. Buttons for locking and unlocking the doors are another feature to consider. You can also ask for a spare, giving you another key to keep in a separate place rather than relying on just one. A lost key may still work with the car if someone finds it. Keep that possibility in mind if you are concerned about where the missing key ended up.
Signs you need lost car key replacement
If you have searched the places where you normally keep your car key and cannot find it, check whether anyone else who drives the vehicle has one.
An empty hook or drawer alone does not mean you need a replacement, but being unable to find either the original or a spare does. The same problem applies if your only set is missing from a bag, coat pocket, or another place you have checked. You may remember having an extra copy, yet discover that it was misplaced or given away.
With a vehicle that starts by pressing a button, a missing fob can leave you unable to start it. A message saying no key is detected is a clue, not proof that yours is lost. If you have it in hand, a weak battery or another fault may be the issue instead. A worn, bent, or broken one that you still possess is also a different problem from having none at all. Count what you actually have, including any spare kept by another driver. If neither of you can locate one, you are facing a complete loss.
How the work goes
Tell us where the car is parked, along with its year, make and model.
If you have the vehicle identification number, or VIN, give us that as well. You may find it at the base of the windshield on the driver's side. Tell us whether the car uses a metal key, a remote key or a push button starter, if you know. If you are unsure, describe the key you lost and any spare you had. Those details give us a starting point for identifying the replacement your car needs. You do not need to have an existing key for us to make one.
At the car, we make the replacement to fit your vehicle. For a car that uses a basic metal key, cutting may be all that is needed. Other vehicles require a key to be programmed to the car as well as cut, while some use a remote without a blade for starting. We test the replacement's functions with you. You can ask for a spare as part of the job. It may need cutting, programming or both, according to the type your car uses. A lost key may still be able to start the car, so do not assume it has been removed from the car's memory.

Lost Car Key Replacement questions
If my missing car key turns up, will it still start the car?
Check how the replacement was programmed before relying on a recovered key. The car may still recognize it, or the key may no longer start the engine if its electronic access was removed. Its metal portion could still fit a door either way. Keep the recovered key separate from your usable set until you know which functions still work.
Can a lost key be disabled if I am worried someone might find it?
We recommend remembering that a missing metal key may still open a door, even if its electronic access is removed. Removing a key from the car's memory is not available on every vehicle, and we may not offer that option for yours. Changing the physical locks is a separate measure from changing electronic access.
My car starts with a button, so what if the replacement fob battery dies?
Check your vehicle owner's manual for its backup starting procedure. Some cars can recognize a fob with a weak battery when it is held at a particular spot, but the location and procedure vary. A hidden metal key may open the door on some models, though the car may need electronic recognition to start the engine. Keep a suitable replacement battery on hand.
Will a replacement key also have the buttons I used to unlock my car?
Check which remote functions a replacement includes before choosing a key. A replacement may be able to start the car without having the same button functions as your missing key. Those functions are separate from the electronic recognition needed to start the engine. Your choice of key style and your car's equipment both matter when comparing the options.
I only had one key before losing it, should I get a spare this time?
Keep a spare key separate from the one you use. A spare needs to be cut and, for cars that require it, programmed to work with your vehicle. You may have a choice between key styles, so check whether the spare includes the remote functions you want. Store it somewhere you can reach without using the car.
