What door lock repair covers

A house door needs its lock and surrounding hardware to work together.

The latch holds the door closed when it meets the strike, the metal plate on the frame. The handle moves that latch, while the cylinder lets your key operate the locking mechanism. If those parts are loose, worn or out of position, turning the key or closing the door may take more effort than it should. Changes in humidity can also make the wood swell or shift, putting the opening out of alignment even when the locking parts themselves are sound.

We repair the parts that hold, operate and secure your entry, whether the trouble is in the hardware or the way it meets the frame. A repair might involve tightening a loose fitting, correcting alignment or restoring movement inside the mechanism. When a component is too worn or damaged to work reliably, replacing that piece is another option. A complete new lock is not always necessary, though it may make sense when several parts are failing or a suitable replacement piece is unavailable. Your choice affects whether you keep the existing hardware or change more of the assembly.

Signs you need door lock repair

A front or back door lock may need repair when the key catches, turns only partway or needs extra pressure to move.

You might have to lift the handle to get the door to stay shut, or notice that the handle feels loose in your hand. The latch may not spring back when you let go, leaving the door able to swing open after you push it closed. If the key sticks even with the door open, the trouble may be inside the lock rather than in the door's fit.

Seasonal swelling or a shift in the door can cause a different set of signs. You may see fresh scrape marks near the strike, hear rubbing as the door closes, or find that you must push or pull hard before the key will turn. A latch that works with the door open but misses its opening when the door is closed may be out of alignment. These symptoms can change with humidity or temperature, so a door that works comfortably under one set of conditions may bind under another. Avoid forcing a stuck key or slamming the door, since either action can make the problem worse.

How the work goes

When you call, tell us which door is affected and what happens when you use the key or handle.

It also helps to mention whether the door closes normally or needs pressure to latch. We examine the hardware and the way the door meets the frame. That lets us distinguish trouble inside the lock from a latch that no longer lines up with the strike. We check for loose fittings and worn parts, too, so the recommended work addresses the cause rather than just the symptom.

We explain whether an adjustment or repair to the existing parts is practical, or whether a replacement part is needed. If a cylinder needs replacing, we explain what that means for your existing key. Alignment adjustments may help when a door has shifted, though work on the door or frame itself may require another trade. After the repair, we check that the handle operates properly and that the door latches and locks with it closed. We also test the key on the side where it is used, so you know how the repaired hardware operates.

Door Lock Repair questions

Why does my front door stick only when the weather gets damp outside?

We check where the door is binding and whether the strike needs adjustment. Moisture can make the door swell enough to change how its edge meets the frame. Avoid forcing the door or key when you feel resistance. If the fit has changed beyond what an adjustment can address, we explain the limits before proceeding.

What should I do if the handle on my back door feels loose?

If the mounting screws are visible, you may gently tighten them, stopping if they will not turn easily. Avoid overtightening, which can strip the threads. If the looseness remains, we look for worn or damaged connections. You may be able to keep the existing hardware, or a worn part may need replacement.

My house key is hard to turn. Should I put oil in the keyhole?

We recommend keeping household oil out of the keyhole because it can attract dirt and leave residue inside. Check whether the key is bent or visibly worn, and avoid forcing it. We can examine the key and cylinder to find where the resistance comes from. A worn key may need replacing, while damage inside the cylinder may call for repair or a new part.

Can I rely on the deadbolt when the latch does not catch?

Check whether the deadbolt extends fully without forcing it. A partial turn may leave it unable to hold securely. We examine how the latch meets the strike and whether an adjustment or replacement part is needed. You can then decide how to address the fault rather than relying on a separate mechanism to make up for it.

If a worn part needs replacing, can I keep using my current house keys?

We check whether the replacement can be set to work with your existing keys. Compatibility varies with the hardware and the condition of the keys themselves. If a match is not practical, you can choose new keys for that entry or ask about changing other locks to use the same key. We explain those choices before replacing anything.
