What lock repair covers

A lock on a house or building entrance should hold the door closed and respond smoothly to its key or knob.

If it sticks, spins, or fails to latch, you may struggle to secure the entry or keep it closed. The trouble is not always in the locking mechanism itself. A shift in alignment, weather related changes, ordinary wear, or a loose part can keep pieces from meeting as they should. A door that has shifted may put pressure on otherwise sound hardware. Forcing the hardware can make the problem worse, so stop if you feel strong resistance.

We repair house and building locks with these problems, including hardware that no longer holds an entry shut. The work may involve tightening a loose component or restoring the way moving parts fit together. If the existing hardware is too worn or damaged for a useful repair, replacement is another option. A new unit may use a different key, though it may be possible to match it to the one you already use. We explain which choices fit the condition of your hardware, including what a repair would address and what replacement would change.

Signs you need lock repair

If your key takes more pressure than it should, catches partway through a turn, or will not come out smoothly, the lock may be worn or affected by weather.

Try turning it gently with the door open, then with it closed. A difference can point to alignment trouble, particularly if you have to lift or push the door to make it work. Do not force the key, since it could bend or break. Trouble in both positions may point to wear inside the lock.

A knob that spins without moving the latch, or feels loose in your hand, can signal a worn or loose connection. You may also notice that the latch stays pulled back, rubs against the opening, or leaves the door sitting shut without actually catching. Check whether the screws on the visible hardware are loose, and see if it closes without pushing or lifting. A loose part or alignment issue may be repairable, while worn internal parts can make replacement the more practical choice.

How the work goes

When you call, we ask which door is affected, what happens when you use the key or handle, and whether the door will close and stay shut.

Tell us if the trouble changes with the weather or if you have noticed a loose piece. Please do not force the key if it resists turning or take the hardware apart. That can make the problem harder to assess or leave you with pieces that no longer fit as they should. We use your description to prepare for the work and explain what the visit will involve.

We examine the lock and check how it lines up with the opening. That tells us whether misalignment, a loose part or wear is responsible. We explain what we find and which repair or replacement options fit the hardware. Repair may mean securing or adjusting a part that is otherwise sound. Replacement means installing another lock, and it may require different keys. You can choose the approach after we explain what each involves. We then carry out the agreed work and test the handle and locking action, including whether the latch catches as it should. We show you how the finished hardware operates.

Lock Repair questions

Can I put household oil in my lock when it starts to stick?

We recommend using a lubricant labeled for locks rather than household oil or grease. Those products can collect dust and leave a sticky residue. Even a suitable lubricant will not fix worn parts or an alignment problem. If you are unsure what is inside already, we can inspect it and recommend an approach.

Why does my door latch catch in dry weather but miss after rain?

Check whether the door rubs or sits differently in its opening when the weather changes. Moisture can make the surrounding materials swell, shifting the latch away from the strike plate. The fit you notice in one set of conditions may not tell the whole story. We can assess whether an adjustment to the hardware is practical.

My knob spins loosely. Is tightening the visible screws a reasonable first check?

Check whether the screws are loose, and tighten them gently if they are accessible. Stop if they will not hold or if the knob still spins. An internal piece may be worn or disconnected, and forcing it can make the problem harder to assess. We can inspect the hardware and determine which parts need attention.

How do I decide whether to repair or replace an older lock?

We check the condition of the hardware and whether you can keep using your existing keys. Repair may make sense when a specific part is loose or worn and suitable parts are available. Replacement is an option when the mechanism is badly worn or parts cannot be found. New hardware may require different keys, though some can be set to match what you already use.

My key turns hard, but I have a spare. What should I check?

Try the spare gently and compare how it feels. If one copy turns more easily, the difficult one may be bent or worn. If both resist, the trouble may be in the mechanism or the way it lines up with the opening. Do not force either copy, since it could bend or break inside.
