Lock Rekeying for Swarthmore homes
A lost key ring with your address on it gives whoever finds it a way to identify your home.
If you live in Swarthmore, rekeying changes which keys work in your existing locks. We change the pins inside each lock cylinder so the missing keys and their duplicates no longer work, and provide new keys that fit. The outside hardware stays in place, so your doors keep the same appearance. You can choose which exterior doors to include, such as a side or back entrance.
Rekeying is also an option if you have moved into a home or a roommate has left and you are unsure who still has a key. In Swarthmore, we can rekey compatible locks to work with one key, though some locks cannot share a key. If a lock is damaged or unreliable, or you want a different style or function, replacement is another choice. You can replace one lock and rekey the others, rather than treating every door the same way. Any lock left unchanged will still accept its existing keys.
Questions we ask on the phone
We will ask which outside doors you want included and what prompted the request.
A move, a roommate leaving or a lost key tells us whether you are concerned about someone else having a copy. Count the entrances you want covered, including a side or back entrance if you use one. Tell us whether you want a single key to work across them, since that choice depends on whether the existing hardware accepts the same type.
Have a description or clear photos of each lock ready, showing both sides of the door and any name or markings you can find. These details help us identify what you have and whether the different entrances may be compatible. Tell us if a lock is loose or hard to turn, or if you do not have a working copy. That information helps us understand whether rekeying alone may address your concern or whether replacement is worth considering.
How the job goes on site
If you have just moved into a home, copies of the old keys may still be out there.
We start by looking at the exterior doors you want included and the condition of their existing locks. We check whether the hardware is suitable for rekeying and whether the cylinders can accept the same key. That matters if you want one key for the front, back and other outside doors. Some combinations are not compatible, so using one key throughout may require replacing some hardware.
Before work begins, we explain which doors can be rekeyed as they are and where replacement is an option. Rekeying changes the internal setup so the old keys no longer work, while the visible hardware stays in place. Replacement gives you different hardware and may make sense if an existing lock is worn or cannot be matched with the others. After the work, we check the new keys with you at each included door and show you which key operates each one.

Close to home in Swarthmore
A contractor had a key while working at your home near Cedar Lane in Swarthmore.
If you no longer want that key to open the door, rekeying changes the pins inside the existing lock so a different key works instead. You keep the same door hardware, but the old key no longer operates the rekeyed lock. Getting the contractor's key back does not account for any copies that might have been made.
You may want one key for several outside doors. That requires cylinders with compatible keyways and internal parts. If yours cannot share a key, you can keep separate keys, or replacement may be an option. A door you leave out of the rekeying will still work with its existing key, so consider whether the contractor's key also opened that entrance.
After the job
With the door open, try each new key in every rekeyed lock, on both sides if there is a keyhole on each side.
An old key should no longer turn the rekeyed locks. If it still works, or a new key catches, call us to check the problem. Avoid forcing a reluctant key, since it could bend or break inside.
After your roommate moves out, make a list of who has the new keys, including anyone who received a spare. Store extras somewhere secure rather than under a mat or near the door. Keep your keys separate from an address tag, and replace a bent key instead of trying to straighten it. If a new key goes missing or someone you did not choose has a copy, we can rekey the affected doors again.
Your questions, answered
Could my side door and front door use the same key if their locks look different?
It may be possible, but both locks must accept the same key shape and use compatible internal parts. Two locks can look alike and still take different keys. If yours are incompatible, you can keep separate keys or replace one lock with a compatible one to make a shared key possible.
If I rekey only the deadbolt, will my old key still work in the doorknob?
Yes, if that key already works the knob and you leave it unchanged. The deadbolt and the knob have separate mechanisms, even when they sit on the same door. You can choose to change access to one or both, but changing only one leaves the other operating with its existing key.
If my front door lock feels worn, will rekeying make it as sturdy as a new one?
No. Rekeying changes which keys work, but it does not restore worn hardware or make a lock stronger. If the lock is loose, damaged or unreliable, replacement gives you a way to address the hardware itself. A lock that works well may only need its key access changed.
